Size
This slender and laterally flat fish can measure up to 45 centimetres in length and weigh approx. one kilogram, but it usually remains smaller.

Sustainability
Natural habitat
It has a large habitat in the North Atlantic, which extends from the Bay of Biscay, and northwards across the Baltic Sea to Spitzbergen. To the west, herrings can be found off the shores of Iceland and southwestern Greenland.
Life
Herrings live in shoals – often with a very high population density – in depths of up to 360 meters, both in open water and in coastal areas.
Food
It feeds on plankton, small crustaceans and snails.
Characteristics
Der silbrig-graue Hering hat wenige, große Schuppen. Sein Augenlied ist durchsichtig und er hat ein, für seine Größe, sehr großes, leicht oberständiges Maul.
Informations
The silver/grey herring has few, yet large, scales. Its eyelids are transparent and the fish has, for its size, a very large and slightly upright mouth.
