This slender and laterally flat fish can measure up to 45 centimetres in length and weigh approx. one kilogram, but it usually remains smaller.
Herrings have firm meat and a strong taste.
As fat sea fish, herrings have a high protein content.
It has a large habitat in the North Atlantic, which extends from the Bay of Biscay, and northwards across the Baltic Sea to Spitzbergen. To the west, herrings can be found off the shores of Iceland and southwestern Greenland.
Herrings live in shoals – often with a very high population density – in depths of up to 360 meters, both in open water and in coastal areas.
It feeds on plankton, small crustaceans and snails.
Der silbrig-graue Hering hat wenige, große Schuppen. Sein Augenlied ist durchsichtig und er hat ein, für seine Größe, sehr großes, leicht oberständiges Maul.
The silver/grey herring has few, yet large, scales. Its eyelids are transparent and the fish has, for its size, a very large and slightly upright mouth.
